Adding A Spouse To Your Real Estate Title After Marriage:
Before the Marriage one person most likely has sole ownership of a house. After the marriage it is common to put the new Spouse on the Deed as joint tenants with right of survivorship. A Quit Claim Deed is commonly used for this purpose. The process described involves purchasing a County Specific Quit Claim Deed. Insert the Sole Owner as the Grantor then adds both of the Spouse’s Names in the Grantee space.
Example: Mike is Sole owner of a House, he marries Sally. He wants Sally to be on the Real Estate Title.
One possible scenario would be:
GRANTOR: MIKE, A Single Man
GRANTEE: MIKE AND SALLY, Husband and Wife as Joint Tenants With Rights Of Survivorship
For recording information you can contact your County Clerk’s Office ask for the Recorders Office. You should file the Quit Claim Deed to make it Public Information. There will be some filing fees for recording the document.
